Walter Houghtaling has dedicated his trial practice to the defense of licensed professionals, business entities and employers. Mr. Houghtaling is admitted to and has handled matters in the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the United States District Court and Colorado’s state courts. A graduate of Norwich University and the University of Denver College of Law, his practice is focused on the representation of attorneys, insurance providers, insurance agents, corporate officers and directors, business owners on tort, contract, and employment claims. After clerking for District Court Judge Edward E. Carelli, he went to work as an insurance defense attorney and has remained in that role since then.
Mr. Houghtaling is a long standing member of the Colorado Bar Association’s Professional Liability Committee and co-chaired the Committee from 2005 to 2010. A graduate of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, he has served as an instructor for trial and discovery programs for the Institute, and has lectured numerous times on professional malpractice and employment topics.
Since 2006 he has been selected by his peers to Best Lawyers in America®and Colorado Super Lawyers. He holds the highest rating awarded by the Martindale-Hubbell® Law Directory publication as an AV® Preeminent™ Lawyer and was included in its Judicial Edition in 2016.
He has been selected to Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World®, Who’s Who in America® and Who’s Who in American Law® multiple times. Mr. Houghtaling has been recognized by the Colorado Bar Association for his contribution of time to the group’s Pro Bono activities, and he currently serves on Disability Law Colorado's Board of Directors.
He has been married to his wife, Paula Plank, since 1981. They have four grown children and three grandchildren. For many years he has coached youth football in the Arapahoe Youth League.
Walter Houghtaling has been a member of the Colorado Bar Association’s Professional Liability Committee since 1993. He served as the committee’s chair in 2005-06. Mr. Houghtaling is a Fellow of the Colorado Bar Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting and promoting the justice system in Colorado. A graduate of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, he has been an instructor for the Institute as well as the University of Denver College of Law and Regis University. He is a board member of Disability Law Colorado which is Colorado's Protection & Advocacy System and home to Colorado's Long-Term Care Ombudsman & Legal Assistance Developer for the Elderly Programs.
